The Prayer Ministry

The Prayer Ministry exists to ignite a desire for deep and intentional prayer in every individual, family, church and nation, and to hold in prayer every ministry, board and committee of the Diocese. Its hope is that prayer becomes a way of life in the Diocese and not an occasion.

Online prayer meetings

Held on the first and third Tuesdays of every month, praying through the mission of the Diocese and its boards, churches, committees and ministries. They are led by Eric Winston and Shanitha Peiris. Anyone on the island can join, which is the point.

The Prayer Request Line

You can send a prayer request for yourself or for your family. Requests go to prayer groups and intercessors across the Diocese. There is no charge, no form to join anything, and no follow up unless you ask for it.

Thy Kingdom Come

Thy Kingdom Come began in 2016 as a call from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. Christians of 85 other denominations, in more than 160 countries, now keep it as well. For the eleven days from Ascension Day to Pentecost, each person prays for five people to come to know Christ. In Sri Lanka it is kept as Your Reign Come. The Prayer Ministry worked with the Very Revd Robert Key at Lambeth Palace to translate the novena into Sinhala and Tamil, and it produces the resources for the Church of Ceylon each year. This year 11,000 prayer cards went to adults, and 7,000 children's prayer and art cards went to Sunday Schools with the Board of Christian Education. Posters and prayers were shared with the Diocese of Kurunegala too. The four Archdeacons and nine Area Deans gathered prayer groups in the deaneries, and more than eighty people, clergy and lay, prayed together online every day.

The Beacon Events

Lambeth Palace asked cathedrals around the world to mark Pentecost with a Beacon Event. Beacon Events were held at the Cathedral in Colombo and at the Cathedral in Kurunegala, with the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, and every denomination was invited. The names prayed for over the eleven days were brought to the foot of the cross. The service was led by the Revd Devsiri Peiris, the Revd Cyril Roche and the Revd Chintha Polgampola. Worship leaders from St Luke's, Borella, Holy Trinity and All Saints' led the worship in all three languages.

Youth mentoring

A one day training programme run with Scripture Union on prayer and personal Bible reading, aimed at young people who will lead others.

Prayer in every deanery

Regional Prayer Hubs are planned in each deanery: gatherings for prayer in person every month or every quarter, training for intercessors, and local ministries of healing and intercession. The aim is for each deanery to keep up its own prayer rather than relying on meetings run from Colombo.

Prayer Coordinator: the Revd Devsiri Peiris.
